| Plastic Introduction: any organic material
with the ability to flow into a desired shape when heat and
pressure are applied to it and to retain the shape when they are
withdrawn. There are few natural polymers generally considered to
be plastics. Plastics can be formed into objects or films or
fibers. Plastics are designed with immense variation in properties
such as heat tolerance, hardness, resiliency and many others.
Most Plastics are lightweight, transparent, tough organic compounds that do not conduct electricity well. There are two basic types of plastic: thermosetting, which cannot be resoftened after being subjected to heat and pressure; and thermoplastic, which can be repeatedly softened and remolded by heat and pressure. Few plastics contain only the polymer resin; many also contain plasticizers, colorants, and stabilizers and antioxidants. Traditional plastics are not biodegradable; recycling of plastics, especially thermoplastics, has become an important industry, and the development of low-cost biodegradable plastics and plastic substitutes is a significant pursuit of industrial research. Major commercial uses of plastics include cars, buildings, packaging, textiles, paints, adhesives, pipes, electrical and electronic components, toys, brushes, and furniture. Common plastics include polyethylene terephthalate, or PET (beverage bottles), PVC, foamed polystyrene, or Styrofoam (insulated food containers), and Lucite. |
