| Fertilizer is organic or inorganic material
containing one or more of the nutrients: mainly nitrogen,
phosphorus, and other Flowers & plant growth. Added to the soil or other
medium, fertilizers provide plant nutrients that are naturally
lacking or that have been removed by harvesting or grazing, or by
physical processes such as leaching or erosion. Organic
fertilizers include animal and green manure, fish and bone meal,
and compost . Microorganisms in the soil decompose organic
material, making its elements available for use by plants.
Inorganic or artificial fertilizers (also called mineral
fertilizers) are formulated in appropriate concentrations and
combinations for various crops and growing conditions. The popular
inorganic fertilizers include: anhydrous ammonia, urea,
superphosphate; and diammonium phosphate, containing 18% nitrogen
and 46% phosphate. Fertilizers may be spread over the soil surface
or plowed under, drilled into deep or shallow layers of the soil,
applied in bands under the rows where the seeds are to be sown,
drilled into the bands at the time of planting, or side-dressed
between planted rows.
Water-soluble fertilizers last the shortest time and need to be applied every 2 weeks. Most products containing time-release fertilizer feed for 2 or 3 months; some last even longer. Timed-release fertilizer granules are designed to feed plants gradually so you do not have to apply very often. This steady, predictable feeding makes efficient use of the plant nutrients, reduces the chance of runoff and pollution, and saves you time and money. Like most fertilizers, it is best to water in plant food after applying. Watering is what starts the feeding process, so you will want to get it started as soon as possible. Minor or trace elements are those that are required by plants in small quantities. They are just as important as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, but are not needed in the same amounts. Minor elements include iron, copper, zinc, boron, molybdenum, chlorine and cobalt. Although soils can contain most of these elements, occasionally they are needed in fertilizers to allow for optimum growth. |
